9th grade: methods of cooking


Here are some methods of cooking for you to learn. Have fun studying!

cook – prepare food for eating by using heat
bake – cook using dry heat in an oven
roast – cook meat in front of an open fire or in an oven
stew – cook slowly in liquid
fry – cook in hot fat or oil
boil – cook in water at 100 C
simmer – boil slowly and gently
steam – cook in water but in an inner container so that water doesn’t directly touch the food
braise – cook meat slowly in a covered pot with a little fat and water
grill – cook over or under direct heat
scramble – mix the white and the yellow parts together while cooking
dice – cut into small square pieces
slice – cut into thin flat pieces
grate – to rub against sharp or rough surface in order to break to pieces
mash – crush into soft substance after cooking
